Hamachi is a free and paid Virtual Private Network or VPN on demand and it can run on Windows, Mac and Linux that will allow traffic between you and the destination you are trying to reach to be encrypted. The difference between the free version and the paid version of Hamachi is that on the free version you can only have 5 people on a network and of course Hamachi will automatically disconnect on the server if you leave your server idle. However there is a way to keep the Hamachi running on the server using the free version but for this, you will need to get a mini PC called Pipo which can be bought here. This works because this mini PC is considered both a tablet and a desktop so when you run Hamachi on this PC the machine never goes idle so therefore always keeping the Hamachi running. I have used it for a long time and have very little issues with it. Sometime the mini PC will freeze and you will need to restart it if a lot of traffic is going through the machine but that is not a big problem if you keep the number of users logging into your server to a minimal (about 5 users or less). I would also suggest installing TeamViewer on the server so that if you need to restart the server you can from a distance.
